MFA is an additional step to verify your identity when you sign in to an application. Using MFA keeps your account more secure, because it makes it more difficult for hackers to steal all the information necessary to impersonate you.
The ‘factor’ in MFA refers to a method of verifying your identity. The most basic type of factor is your password, which is often the primary, or initial authentication factor you’ll be prompted for. Your organization may choose to ask for more factors to complement your password. These additional factors could range from an app on your phone that generates a code for you to enter after you’ve typed in your password to a USB key you have to insert into your computer, or even a fingerprint scan.
To learn more about MFA, go here.
Some Oakland County services require MFA prior to using the service. This is driven by the sensitivity of the data, the security requirements and user's location.
Oakland County strongly recommends setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) when configuring your account.
MFA requires users to provide an additional factor to verify their identity aside from entering a password — such as a code generated by a hardware or software token, a one-time email password (OTP), or a biometric identifier (like Apple’s Touch ID). The three basic elements that can be used in MFA are:
  • something the user knows, like a password or pin number;
  • something the user has, like a mobile device; and
  • something the user is, like a fingerprint, optics or voice.
Please see the guide here for more details on how to configure MFA on your Okta IAM account.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Okta can be configured in 2 ways:
  1. Selecting the Settings option from the dropdown menu on your username at the top-right of the Application Dashboard:
    • Click on Edit Profile.
    • Enter your password & click on Verify.
    • Click Setupon the MFA factor you would like to configure.
  2. You will be prompted to configure when you are attempting to access an application that requires MFA:
You can configure multiple factors per account. This provides you with an alternate when one of the factors is lost or unavailable. Oakland County recommends two factors to be configured at a minimum.
Here is a list of the supported factors:
  • SMS - SMS Authentication uses the text messaging service on your cell phone to send you a one-time login code.
Watch this video for more information and configuration steps: https://youtu.be/bYlLSipU5BA
  • Okta Verify - Okta Verify is a mobile app that verifies your identity in one of two ways. Okta can send you a push notification that you approve using Okta Verify. Alternatively, Okta Verify can generate a six-digit code that you enter into your Okta login screen to access your required app.
Watch this video for more information and configuration steps:: https://youtu.be/DZu--diVQCg
Download the Okta Verify app from the Apple App Store or Google Play onto your primary mobile device.
  • Voice Call - This factor calls you via your smartphone or landline and reads an access code aloud. You then type the code into the browser to access your app. This is great for people who don’t have access to a cell phone because it doesn’t require push notifications or text messages.
