MFA is a required additional step to verify identity when users sign into an application. Using MFA keeps your account more secure, making it difficult for hackers to steal information necessary to impersonate users. The ‘factor’ in MFA refers to a method of verifying your identity. The most basic type of factor is your password, which is the primary authentication method.
Oakland County requires one factor in addition to password. These additional factors range from an app on your phone, Okta Verify, or a biometric or security key.
To learn more about MFA, go here.
Please see the guide here for more details on how to configure MFA on your IAM account.
IAM does not log you out of your applications, the security timeout logs you out of your IAM session.
Single Sign-on (SSO) to the Okta Application Dashboard is only available when logging in from the Oakland County campus using Chrome or Edge.
To change the order of your apps, click and hold on an app icon, then drag and drop the icon to the location where you would like it to be displayed.
The IAM Application Dashboard allows you to create up to 5 sections to organize your applications. You can create new sections to customize your Dashboard by clicking the “+ Add section” sign under the Application Dashboard section or the left navigation menu.
The IAM supports the following web browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox & Safari. We recommend Chrome and Edge.
Single Sign-on (SSO) is available for Oakland County Employees and Contractors when accessing the IAM from the Oakland County campus. This feature is available on Chrome and Edge only. Firefox cannot verify SSO, at this time you will have to enter your username and password each time.
Oakland County Employees must manage their profile in Workday, everyone else must contact the Oakland County Service Center.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) configuration

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Okta can be configured in 2 ways:
  1. Selecting the Settings option from the dropdown menu on your username at the top-right of the Application Dashboard:
    • Click on Edit Profile.
    • Enter your password & click on Verify.
    • Next you will be challenged with Multifactor.
    • Under Security Methods click Set up on the MFA factor you would like to configure.
    • You will be asked for your password and multifactor again to setup additional factors.
  2. Also note that you will be prompted to configure when you are attempting to access an application that requires MFA:
You can configure multiple factors per account. This provides you with an alternate when one of the factors is lost or unavailable. Oakland County recommends two factors to be configured at a minimum.
Here is a list of the supported factors:
  • Okta Verify - Okta Verify is a mobile app that verifies your identity in one of two ways. Okta can send you a push notification that you approve using Okta Verify. Alternatively, Okta Verify can generate a six-digit code that you enter into your Okta login screen to access your required app.
Download the Okta Verify app from the Apple App Store or Google Play onto your primary mobile device.
  • SMS/Voice (Legacy support only) - Some users have the option to register SMS/Voice as a factor. Okta will send a text message or call the registered phone number and provide a 6-digit code that can be entered into the Okta login screen to access the required app.
NOTE: using SMS/Voice as a factor may consume data and incur costs through your phone provider. To avoid these costs, SMS/Voice can be removed as a factor, and another method can be used instead. By registering a phone number, you acknowledge and accept this.
